Local budding musicians had an amazing opportunity to learn from a world class conductor this week. Dr. Cheung Chau is the director of orchestral studies at Utah Valley University and is the music director of the Utah Valley Youth Symphony. He also serves as the music director of a symphony in Poland and previously as a music director, cello performer, and guest conductor all over the world. While in Vernal on Monday, Dr. Chau taught 5 private cello lessons and held a two hour clinic with the 50 member youth orchestra. “We’re so grateful for Dr. Chau,” shares UBYCO Director Brad Vanfleet. “Our association with him has opened so many opportunities in the past, such as playing in Abravanel Hall. The kids that go on tour in the summer have had the opportunity the last three years to spend a couple weeks with him and his wife Blanka Bednarz, two world renowned musicians. I’m grateful beyond words that he would think of tiny Vernal and come spend time with us when he’s performed on nearly every continent.” The students may not understand just how big of a deal it was to have this opportunity but they were still excited and worked hard for Dr. Chau on Monday.
