If you’ve wondered what the deal is with a musical being made about Spongebob, you are in good company. Uintah High Theatre Director Chris Piner once had the very same thought about The Spongebob Musical but he and his wife Barbara fell in love after seeing it on Broadway and knew it was one they would bring to the Uintah stage once the rights allowed. “The show title presents a marketing challenge,” shares Piner. “Theatre goers might guess the show is geared for children only, and that assumption would be inaccurate. In fact, The SpongeBob Musical on Broadway was nominated for the Best Musical Tony Award and was predicted to win. Though it didn’t end up winning, it did prove its worth at the box office and with fans. The characters in the musical are not in bulky theme park looking costumes. Instead you’ll see them in a human form [and] as usual our high school talent will blow you away. Just you wait.” Piner shares that one of the biggest surprises of the show is in the music. The SpongeBob Musical features different artists for each number, including songs written by John Legend, Lady A, Aerosmith, Cyndi Lauper, David Bowie, The Plain White T’s, Panic At the Disco, and more. The show runs March 3-4, 6-7, and 9-11 at 7pm. Children under 5 will not be admitted and no babes in arms. Tickets are available at Uintah.Ludus.com.
