Uintah Basin Healthcare is sounding the alarm on an issue that is widespread: Spoofing. “We have been made aware of some potential spoofing and phishing attempts to our patients, asking you to update your medical record over the phone,” shares the announcement. “We will never ask for sensitive information over the phone. If you are ever unsure about the legitimacy of a call, voicemail, text, or email – do not respond. Feel free to contact us directly or visit us in person.” So what is spoofing? The FCC explains that spoofing is when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to your caller ID display to disguise their identity. Scammers often use neighbor spoofing so it appears that an incoming call is coming from a local number, or spoof a number from a company or a government agency that you may already know and trust. If you answer, they use scam scripts to try to steal your money or valuable personal information, which can be used in fraudulent activity. Like Uintah Basin Healthcare recommends, it is better to hang up and then contact the agency directly.
