Many in the Uintah Basin have a love for the great outdoors and this week with the pristine night sky we can also appreciate the cosmos. There will be an astronomical phenomenon that hasn’t been visible since the 17th century and won’t be seen again for another 400 years. Comet Nishimura will be close enough to Earth that it may be possible to view with the naked eye. The green comet is on a 434 year orbit but will be sweeping within 78 million miles of Earth. The best chance to see it is with a telescope but its peak day is expected to be September 17th when it could be bright enough to see with binoculars, or even with the naked eye. NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies says that the best way to look in the Northern Hemisphere is to find a clear view of the east-northeast horizon about half an hour before morning twilight.
