Was A Massive Traveling Black Cloud In Uintah County A Tornado?

With all the crazy weather of 2023 why not add a tornado to the mix! That’s exactly what Roy and Joyce Montoya suspect they experienced on Thursday while at their home southwest of the Dinoland Golf Course. Roy says they were at home in the middle of the day when everything went dark followed by something making “a huge racket” outside. They ran to the door and saw a massive black cloud that extended to the ground and it was on the move, all while throwing items as it passed by. The fast moving cloud was almost over the nearby ridge when Roy was able to get a picture of it before it was gone from view. Neighbors also experienced the eerie weather occurrence and while no one was sure what exactly it was, Roy had no doubt. “I’ve seen something like it before in Kansas City but it was the first time I’ve seen anything like it here,” shares Roy. “It was impressive and mind boggling and just as big and black as can be. To me, it was a tornado.” National Weather Service did issue wind advisories across the lower elevation of eastern Utah for Thursday, April 20th, with afternoon wind gusts of up to 50 mph. While the fast moving cloud did not have the classic long funnel shape most associated with a tornado, Roy said it did narrow at the ground and moved and acted like a tornado, not a dust devil or wind gust. So in case you are playing weather BINGO this spring, this is your cue to cross off tornado in Uintah County!
