It takes a community to watch for signs to help prevent suicide as instances continue to grow. Live On Utah teaches that it is important to recognize the risks and familiarize ourselves with the warning signs. Pay attention to recent events in others’ lives like the death of a loved one, a serious health condition, financial loss or instability, loss of a job, or sudden loss of freedom, to name a few. Warnings could be reckless or anxious behavior, changes in sleep habits, depression, a person getting their affairs in order, giving away belongings, self harm, talking about being a burden to others, saying goodbyes, sudden mood changes, social isolation and withdrawal. If you recognize these warning signs or think someone might be considering suicide – ask them! This does not make someone more likely to attempt suicide and can help save lives. Do not hesitate to call or text the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988. To learn more about warning signs, visit the Live On Utah website at liveonutah.org.
