The February Daggett County Fence Post includes a call for volunteers for two important causes. First, the Daggett County Museum and Visitors Center is hoping to recruit volunteers who love sharing the history of Daggett County and are looking for something fun to do this summer. The times can vary and those interested in this type of opportunity can fill out the volunteer form at www.DaggettCounty.org. Volunteers are also needed for the Daggett County Search and Rescue team. Training is provided and this is a chance to make a real impact in the Daggett County community. Please don’t “rescue” livestock guardian dogs. While most people are just trying to help, it’s the time of year again to remind the public that some dogs are not pets and their job has protection under the law. If you are concerned, call Animal Control or law enforcement first. Wyoming’s Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office shares this reminder every year during winter grazing season because these dogs are often mistaken for lost or abandoned pets but they are actually using the special skills of their breed to watch over and protect livestock from predators. Ranchers use livestock guardian dogs in many parts of the Uintah Basin. These dogs are often with the herd and sometimes not as close as you would expect. Puppies are also often left with the flock so the dog can develop a bond with the sheep. If you see these dogs, DO NOT pick them up. If you are seriously concerned you can contact Animal Control and those officers can contact the ranchers to see if a dog is missing but again, please do not intervene and pick these dogs up.
