Promoting literacy is among the pillars of the many ways the Vernal Rotary Club supports the community and they have found a new way of doing just that. The Rotary Club’s Literacy Committee presented Davis Elementary with a check for $2,300 dollars to purchase books for the school’s book vending machine. Davis students earn prizes for reading at least 100 minutes each week and every student that continues to meet the weekly goal have their names in a drawing to receive a token for the book vending machine with 25 students being drawn for a token each week. School media specialist Chalyce Johnson says “the students love the novelty of choosing a book from the vending machine and there’s new books in there every week.” Davis Elementary Principal Cris Labrum reports that more than 1,000 books have been given away this school year and they are very grateful for the Vernal Rotary Club’s help in keeping the Book Vending Machine going.
