Vernal Police Department has reported on the success so far of their pedestrian safety operation with the first two days of school over. “During the 5 hour operation, officers conducted 37 traffic stops and issued citations to less than half of the violators,” shares Vernal PD. “The majority of the vehicles stopped were given a verbal warning and re-educated regarding a drivers duty when a pedestrian enters the roadway at a crosswalk.” In simplest terms, when a pedestrian steps off a curb, it is the obligation of the drivers to slow or stop until lanes of travel are clear. If a vehicle is stopped for a pedestrian, the operator of any other vehicle approaching from the rear must also stop and may not overtake and pass the stopped vehicle. Vernal PD also report that several young pedestrians were also talked to about safety. On one of the traffic stops the driver was cited for Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, No Valid Drivers License, and Open Container. More pedestrian safety operations will be conducted through the first month of school.
