Water is a hot topic throughout the western United States and is affecting new construction in parts of the Ashley Valley. Earlier this year, the Ashley Valley Water and Sewer Improvement District announced a hold on new culinary connections within their District while they performed a water study to determine if they had enough water rights to bring on new customers. Their study found that their initial water rights were exhausted and this fall announced that new customers would have to bring with them enough water rights to be connected to their system. Recognizing the need, Vernal City staff recommended to the Vernal City Council that the City undergo a study to understand Vernal City’s current water rights and usage. The study would explore how Vernal City water is utilized, the future outlook, and how much water should be secured for future housing units within Vernal City limits. Vernal City Council considered the need during Wednesday’s City Council meeting and approved the water rights study.
