Ute Tribe Pushes for Meeting with Interior Secretary

The Ute Tribe is pushing for a meeting with Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke as they push back against Trump’s Executive Order that could change the designation of the Bear Ears National Monument. “The Monument was designated in response to government-to-government discussions that honored the trust relationship between the Federal Government and Indian Country,” shared the Ute Tribal Business Committee in a press release on the topic. “Any proposed changes can only be done through full tribal consultation that respects our sovereignty and the authority of the tribes to manage the Monument.” The Business Committee plans to continue to push for answers from Secretary Zinke. “It’s been almost two months since we asked Secretary Zinke to meet,” shared the Business Committee. “He must live up to his commitment to work with Tribes, honor our voice and not just listen to D.C. politicians.”
