The Ute Business Committee announced on Tuesday that the upcoming annual Ute Indian Tribe membership meeting has been postponed due to the threat of COVID-19. The Tribe’s Constitution and Bylaws require that the annual meeting typically be held on the first Wednesday of November each year. “…With that date quickly approaching, the status of the COVID-19 pandemic does not allow this meeting to be held in a safe manner,” shared Tuesday’s letter signed by Chairman Luke Duncan. “As of the date of this letter, the state of Utah has surpassed 100,000 COVID-19 cases, with over 1,000 new cases being reported every day. Today we had 19 Tribal Members test positive for COVID-19 with 33 active cases in total. Considering these statistics, the Business Committee has decided that the annual meeting should be postponed at this time.” The Business Committee also shared that hosting a virtual meeting was also considered but due to confidentiality issues and other requirements it was determined there was no effective way to hold the meeting virtually.
