For those that like to fish community ponds and specifically like fishing for catfish, be sure to get out there in June. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources will be stocking channel catfish, 14 to 15 inches and weighing about a pound and a half each, throughout northern Utah. The first delivery will be on June 6th and then again on June 20th, delivering anywhere from 3,500 to 5,000 pounds. It will make for great fishing. “Get one of these cats on the end of your line, and you’ll have a fun fight on your hands,” says Chris Penne, regional aquatics manager for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. “By June, the water at most of the community ponds is too warm for trout. Channel catfish do really well in warmer water, though. That’s why we switch to stocking catfish in the summer.” A couple tips for catching catfish, try fishing just as the sun is coming up and right before it sets. For bait, try using nightcrawlers, raw shrimp, sting baits, cheese baits and.or anything that smells. Catfish is drawn by smell so it might take a while for a catfish. Leave it in place for 15 minutes and if you haven’t caught anything reel it in and cast in a different area. The closest community pond is Little Montes Reservoir in Ballard.
