The Uintah Basin was well represented at the USA Wrestling – Utah’s banquet at Utah Valley University on Monday as a Uintah High alum was inducted into the Brunson Utah Wrestling Hall of Fame. Candace Workman has a long list of accolades in the wrestling world and it all began at age 7. Several dozen supporters from Vernal were in attendance last night, including former Uintah High wrestling coach Gregg Stensgard who had the honor of introducing Workman during the ceremony. The fact that Workman pioneered the way for other young women to participate in the sport in Utah was brought up in different ways throughout the evening. It’s easy to see why as her state titles, national titles and All-American honors began in junior high and continued through high school and into a successful professional wrestling career, including in 2016 when Workman placed 4th at the USA Olympic Team trials. Since 2017, Workman has focused on coaching at Uintah as well as other coaching opportunities in Utah and for USA Wrestling. Workman’s love and knowledge of the sport have made her an excellent coach. “As a kid, I never really thought of myself as a ‘girl’ wrestler,” shares Workman. “I always just wanted to be a wrestler. Now as a coach, I don’t really think of myself as a ‘girl’ coach. I am a coach who happens to be a girl.” Evans Family Media joins in offering congratulations to Candace Workman, the newest member of the Utah Wrestling Hall of Fame.
