The University of Utah has joined a growing number of higher education institutions in offering a Native Student Scholarship program and applications are now open. The Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah & Ouray Reservation is of course on the list of recognized tribal nations but this only builds on a relationship that is already in place. The University of Utah and the Ute Indian Tribe have maintained a relationship for years, most recently renewing their memorandum of understanding in 2020 to allow the university’s sports teams to continue using the name “Utes”, an agreement which has been in place since 1972. The announcement of the scholarship program states that it will meet undergraduate Native student tuition and mandatory fees not covered by scholarships and grants from other sources. President Taylor Randall stated that “the availability of this scholarship for our Native student population underscores the U’s commitment to providing access to higher education that can transform the lives of students across Utah.” Applications for the program are being accepted starting today.
