Unique 5K This Month A Service Project To Assemble Bags For Foster Kids

A group of local interfaith Christian women have rallied the troops to make a huge difference for local foster children. In 2022, the group held an interfaith women’s conference with great success. They decided for their 2023 event to plan an interfaith service project and these amazing women took off. They learned that there is a need for large bags that kids can use to quickly pack belongings when being removed from a bad circumstance. Rather than give the kids garbage bags, which often happens, it was decided that they could sew at least 500 large bags as well as provide smaller drawstring backpacks with age-appropriate items and snacks. As word got out about the project, support came pouring in with donations and volunteers making bags. The idea also came up to fill the bags in a unique way. They are holding a 5K on June 24th at 8am that will weave from the Uintah County Library through Vernal, passing multiple churches and other stops along the way. At the stops, the 5K participant will fill the bag with items and by the time they are finished, the bag will be full and ready to be donated. “Because of the generous donations of so very many to fill the 900 bags, we are not going to need to get registration fees from those participating in the 5K,” shares event coordinator Lisa Labrum. “It will now be free to anyone who wants to participate. If they don’t want to do the 5K or are not able to, come to the 4H building at Western Park around 10am and you can help put together the remaining bags.” All are invited to come!
