It was a great weekend for high school track and field at the state tournament over the weekend at BYU in Provo. The Union High School girls track team dominated in 3A with the girls taking 1st place with a team score of 94 points. Coach Levi Wise gives credit to the girls’ focus on teamwork. “Teamwork wins championships, even in individual sports like track and field,” shares Coach Wise. “We had one girl who had qualified for state in 3 individual events. We thought we’d have the best shot at winning state if she only did one of her individuals and did three relays since they only get four events! We asked her about it and her response was “whatever is best for the team.” We had another girl find motivation in the race by just thinking about the team score,” Coach Wise continues. “We can accomplish way more together than we can by ourselves!” Impressive performances were delivered at state by youth from around the Uintah Basin. State champions in 1A competition were Manila’s Ruthanna Wilson in long jump, Altamont’s Ashton Arnold in the mile and 800 meter, and Altamont’s Grayson Panas in shot put. State champions in 3A competition were Union’s Jaylie Jenkins in the mile and 800 meter, Union girls medley relay, Kenyon Rook in discus, and Union boys in the 4 by 100 meter relay. The state champion in 4A competition was Uintah’s Treysen Colmenares in javelin. Several Uintah High records were also broken during the state 4A meet, including the boys 4 by 200 relay, Aliysa Hunting in the 400 meter, and David Anderson in the 3200 meter. Well done to all the Uintah Basin track and field athletes.
