Uintah High Wrestling recognized two individuals with the Distinguished Alumni Award
during the 2024 Tournament of Champions this month. The Uintah High Girls Wrestling
Team honored Sherry Smuin Jessen. When Sherry began wrestling in the early 1980s,
girls were not technically allowed to compete. The more Sherry won, the more adversity
she faced, including angry parents surrounding the mat as she competed, ignoring the
referee’s requests that they move back. Sherry helped pave the way for the future of girls
in wrestling. Ryan Lewis was honored by the Uintah High Boys Wrestling Team. During
his high school career, Ryan earned a 104-6 record with 74 pins. He is a 21-time
All-American, placing third at the Olympic Trials, and in 2010 was inducted into the
Utah Wrestling Hall of Fame. He remains part of the Uintah High School Boys Wrestling
coaching staff.
