Girls in high school wrestling in the state of Utah is old news. In fact, according to UHSAA records, the sport has been coed for most of its history in the state. Uintah High School was put on the map and history was made when Ute wrestler Candace Workman took second in state in 2008 as the first female wrestler to place at the state tournament. Ute female wrestlers are part of making history once again with their team this year competing in the first year of girls wrestling as a sanctioned sport by the Utah High School Activities Association. The state competition in February was the first time in Utah’s athletics history that girls competed at state in an all girls tournament. The Ute Girls Wrestling Team, made up of five wrestlers, finished 4th overall in the first-ever 4A girls championship and Chanley Green (115) was named the state champion in her weight class! Maycee Young (132) and Maddison Tenney (245) each took second place, and Hayden Oaks (124) finished third. Congratulations to the Uintah High School girls wrestling team on an amazing season and representing the Uintah Basin so well!
