The Uintah County Mosquito Abatement District is busy striving to make life more comfortable for the public. District Director Kirk Robbins provided an update at the Vernal Chamber luncheon last week with some eye opening information. The beautiful Green River corridor is unfortunately the producer of one of the greatest masses of mosquitos in the world, requiring a serious approach to managing the mosquito population. Robbins shared that there are up to 10 species of mosquitoes in the valley and the type being dealt with now are called flood mosquitoes. The flooding from the Green River makes it difficult to treat. They use an airplane to drop product into the river. Fogging is also done but only after sunset. To manage mosquitoes around your home, Robbins suggested using a bug zapper but to hang it away from your home. Also be sure to remove any standing water from the property.
