Suicide is a major public health concern and Uintah Basin Healthcare is doing their part to educate the public. In 2020, suicide was the 12th leading cause of death overall in the United States, claiming the lives of over 45,900 people. Suicide is complicated and tragic but often preventable. Knowing the warning signs for suicide and how to get help can help save lives. Megan Hopkins, DNP Behavioral Health & Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner of Uintah Basin Healthcare, states that if you are concerned someone is feeling suicidal use clear and direct language to talk to them about it. Research shows that being clear does not increase the chances of suicide but it can help them feel like someone is listening and understands what they are going through. Encourage help seeking behaviors. If you have had suicidal thoughts, identify individuals that you can reach out to for support and keep their names and numbers nearby. For additional support download the SafeUT app, call or text the crisis lifeline at 988, and/or contact local emergency services. You are not alone and there are people who want to help.
