A plan to reopen Highway 6 with vehicles traveling on gravel at a reduced speed limit of 25mph is moving forward. UDOT representative John Gleason shared with Evans Family Media on Monday morning that crews laid down road base Sunday night to open it to emergency services if needed and have continued to put down more gravel and road base with the goal of opening it to the public by noon on Monday. “There is not a good alternate for US-6 so we are working to get it open as quickly as possible,” he shared. UDOT was able to clear multiple mudslides on Highway 191 which was especially good as it is one of the only commercial alternate routes for Highway 6. The largest mudslide on Highway 191 was 5 feet deep across the road and there were travelers stuck between the mudslides. Thankfully, crews were able to get it cleared Sunday night, sending travelers on their way. Gleason expects major repairs on Highway 6 to take at least a few days but with the plan to reopen Highway 6 by at least early afternoon on Monday, anyone traveling that route should expect reduced speeds and added travel time. The mudslide and damage to Highway 6 was due to the burn scar from the 2021 Bear Fire.
