Uintah Basin listeners tuned in to Newstalk KVEL 104.5FM and AM920 last night to the U.S. Senate debate between incumbent Republican candidate Mike Lee and Independent challenger candidate Evan McMullin. The debate took place at Utah Valley University in Orem and was moderated by Doug Wright. While the debate was full of tense moments, there were multiple topics the pair provided similar responses on, including student loans, social security, and abortion. Some fireworks surrounded the topics of the 2020 presidential election, events on January 6th at the U.S. Capitol, and foreign policy. Utahns and Uintah Basin residents’ way of life is being affected daily by inflation and rising prices at the grocery store and at the pump. When asked who bears responsibility, Senator Lee stated that “inflation has but one cause. It is federal spending.” Evan McMullin emphasized in response that a Senator must stand up to the reckless spending of both parties, pointing out spending by Trump. Senator Lee’s response was that he called out President Trump’s spending not only in public but also in private every chance he got. The debate can be viewed on the Utah Debate Commission YouTube Channel.
