Tributes continue to be shared on social media and in news stories nationally to remember the life of the ice climber who was killed in a tragic accident in Duchesne County on Sunday. While the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office did not release the name of the victim, many friends have identified her as 41-year-old Meg O’Neill of Salt Lake City. O’Neill was one of three climbers attempting to climb Raven Falls near Indian Canyon when a massive ice column fell. O’Neill was reported to have pushed her fellow climber out of the way before being trapped underneath the ice. While offering their condolences, the Sheriff’s Office described O’Neill as a “brave, courageous woman who lost her life while saving another.” O’Neill worked for Embark Outdoors, a nonprofit organization focused on building up refugee young women through outdoor sports. Embark Outdoors shared in a statement that O’Neill was the heart and soul of their program and was a mentor to most of the young women in their program for half their lives. It’s clear she is missed by many people. To all interested in joining, a Candlelight Vigil is being held Saturday, April 8th, from 8 to 10pm at Canyon Rim Park in the Salt Lake area.
