Summer Safety Message: Wear Sunscreen

The Uintah Basin is going to get some blistering sun so be sure to wear sunscreen if you are planning to be outside. Here are some tips to maximize sunscreen’s protection. Be sure to choose sunscreen that protects your skin from ultraviolet-B (UVB) rays, which cause sunburns and skin damage, as well as ultraviolet-A (UVA) rays that increase your risk for skin cancer. Also look for sunscreen that contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Be aware that any sunscreen with SPF higher then 30 is not proportionately better in protection. So while SPF 30 absorbs 97% of the sun’s burning rays, SPF 50 absorbs just slightly more — 98%. Apply sunscreen early as it takes an individual’s skin up to half an hour to absorb. There is no such thing as all day sunscreen, it wears off after a couple hours so apply every two hours. Reapply every 60 to 90 minutes if using spray sunscreen, are swimming or sweating, or are around water, snow, and sand. For even greater protection use lip balm with SPF 30, wear a tightly woven hat with a wide brim, wear wrap-around sunglasses with UV protection, and wear a tightly woven, dark long-sleeved shirt or special sun-protective clothing. Individuals can also be wise by seeking shade between 10am to 4pm, as that is when the UV rays are strongest.
