Utah’s Department of Workforce Services has provided an update on the state’s unemployment claims. According to the report, the number of new claims filed for unemployment benefits in Utah was 4,996 for the week of May 24th through the 30th. This was in addition to the 93,276 weekly claims filed which paid out a total of nearly $25 million dollars in benefits. Nearly $48 million more dollars were paid out to claimants qualifying for the federally funded $600 dollar weekly stimulus. There were 7,707 individuals that ended their unemployment claim on May 23rd and 9,772 who ended their claim the week before. “For the first time since the start of the pandemic, the number of new weekly claims fell just below the state’s previous record high of 5,300 claims in 2013,” shares DWS Unemployment Insurance Division director Kevin Burt. “The consistent decreases continue to be encouraging.”
