Rainstorms appeared to help lower fire activity on the Speirs Fire in Daggett County on Monday. The last official update from the Forest Service, however, did not account for the rain. At that time on Monday morning, fire growth had occurred primarily on the south and east side of the fire, crossing over Spruce Creek about a mile southeast of Speirs Peak and the size of the wildfire had reached an estimated 700 acres. The fire is burning in steep and rugged terrain with minimal access. Suppression efforts have included aerial resources of large air tankers, single engine air tankers and one helicopter. Crews on the ground have focused on creating the fire line and extinguishing fire spots. Aerial resources will continue to assist in suppression efforts, with a mix of helicopters and fixed wing air tankers. As of Monday morning’s update, the fire remained at 0 percent contained and had approximately 93 fire personnel assigned to the incident. There are currently no evacuations, closures of campgrounds or developed recreation sites, or campfire restrictions in place.
