Blizzard conditions in Moffat County on Wednesday stranded motorists and closed Highway 40 from the Utah border to Craig and Highway 318 from the Utah border to Maybell. These closures remained in place early Friday morning, with no promise at that time as to when they would reopen. According to the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, Moffat County Search and Rescue worked with their team to locate and retrieve stranded motorists on Highway 318.

“Approximately 19 people and one dog were transported to Maybell via snowcat and temporarily provided services at the Maybell Community Center,” shares the Sheriff’s Office report. “All subjects were relayed to Craig, where overnight accommodations were arranged.”

Highway 40 and Highway 319 remained closed on Thursday as the Colorado Department of Transportation worked to clear the snow drifts and while the abandoned passenger vehicles were removed.

The Sheriff’s Office recognized all the partners that have worked tirelessly to protect/rescue those stranded on Highway 40 and 318 and continue to focus every effort on re-opening both highways.

UPDATE 7AM Friday 02/17/2023 – US Highway 40 and 318 are open in both directions from Maybell to the Utah/Colorado state line.
