Slow Year for West Nile Virus Yet Still Important to Take Precautions

Thankfully it’s a slow year for West Nile Virus. The Utah Department of Health reports that there is a total of 40 mosquito pools this year in Utah that have tested positive for West Nile Virus in the state including one in Uintah County and one in Duchesne County. While it would be better there had been none this is still good news considering by this time in 2017, Utah had 105 positive mosquito pools reported. No human cases of West Nile Virus have been confirmed so far this year and it is important that precautions continue to be taken so this remains the case. Not all local mosquitos are the breed that carry West Nile Virus but of the species that do, they only bite from dusk to dawn. The best thing to do to prevent West Nile Virus is to use a product with DEET and to cover up with long sleeve shirts and pants when out after sunset.
