Students are hard at work on Uintah High’s upcoming production of
Starlight Express
and they are doing a lot more than just memorizing lines and practicing music. In fact, the entire cast is working to master their roller skating skills for the production and spent much of Saturday practicing in the gym of the Vernal Middle School with a special instructor. Clark Madsen is a renowned roller skating expert who teaches all over the country and even around the world, specializing in rhythm skating. “The students were extremely responsive to the training,” shares Uintah High Theatre Director Chris Piner. “Clark was able to keep the kids attentive while learning new skills for 4 hours. There were around 30 students who came to the training. Every one of them leaving with a new set of skills and a smile on their faces.”
Starlight Express
is one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s lesser-known musicals with the opportunity for awesome special effects as the entire cast is on roller skates. Thanks to Saturday’s clinic, Uintah Theatre is that much closer to delivering a fantastic production. Piner says the students learned how to safely execute some advanced tricks that will be impressive onstage.
Starlight Express
will run March 8th through the 16th in the renovated Uintah High School auditorium.
