The election is approaching and ballots are scheduled to go in the mail this week. Uintah County Sheriff Steve Labrum has a message for local voters with information on state Constitutional Amendment C found on the ballot this year. Sheriff Labrum on why Constitutional Amendment C is important, states, “Utah Amendment C establishes in Utah’s constitution that county sheriffs will continue to be elected by voters. Sheriffs have been elected since America’s founding to uphold law enforcement and protect civil values. If this is how we do it, why is [Constitution Amendment C] needed? In the recent past, aggressive county councils have suggested sheriffs would be better appointed and subject to their political decisions rather than have an independent sheriff subject to the people,” explains Sheriff Labrum. “It is critical that your sheriff and our deputies stay closely connected to the community, aligning local law enforcement with the values and priorities of the people we serve.” Sheriff Labrum also emphasized that Amendment C is straightforward, has bipartisan support, and ensures that how Utah does it now, is how Utah will do it in the future.
