While overall there have been fewer bear sightings this year in Utah, the Division of Wildlife Resources is reminding all to take bear safety seriously after a family campsite was recently torn up near Current Creek. Thankfully in that situation, the family was not there when the bear came through. The bear found its way inside the tent and even clawed through a can of bug spray before ripping the tent up to get out. DWR conservation outreach manager Tonya Kieffer-Selby says that many smells can draw a bear to a campsite including the scent of deodorant, toothpaste, and even the scent of things in a closed can like bug spray or soda. The best thing you can do is keep your campsite clean and store food and scented items where a bear cannot get to them like in a locked trailer or the trunk of your car. The DWR posted flyers near the Current Creek campsite to alert recreationists to be on the lookout for the bear, which if located will likely then be relocated for the safety of all.
