A rotenone treatment is scheduled to remove all fish from the South Fork of Sheep Creek on the North slope of the Uinta Mountains in Daggett County starting this week. The Division of Wildlife Resources is conducting the treatment on the Flaming Gorge Ranger District August 29th through September 5th in an effort to restore native cutthroat trout to the waters. A closure will be in effect for the treatment period for public safety and to allow ground crews to work safely. The public must stay 20 feet away from the following waters: Daggett Lake, Candy Lake, Penguin Lake, Upper Anson Lake, and Lower Anson as well as the Sheep Creek Irrigation Canal upstream of Forest Service Road 221 to the confluence of the creek and the canal. “The temporary closure of the treatment area only affects treated waters and prohibits the public from entering the water and obtaining drinking water from sources in the treatment area. All hiking trails and other access will remain open to public use,” shares DWR Northeastern Region Outreach Manager Tonya Kieffer-Selby. “The treatment areas will be well signed and will reopen after the treatment process is over and rotenone levels are no longer detectable in the streams.”
