The list may grow and change with time of safety topics parents need to teach their kids and while the importance of teaching kids to stay away from illegal drugs is obvious, what about teaching them about safe use of over the counter drugs? Roosevelt City Police Department is urging just that, sharing that there have been several kids get sick from taking more than recommended doses of over the counter drugs. “Please let your kids know how dangerous it is to use over the counter drugs contrary to instructions,” shares Roosevelt PD. “Especially be aware if your kids are using Coricidin and other similar medications.” Coricidin is a cold and cough medicine that contains an antihistamine and a cough suppressant known as DXM. An FDA report states that taken at rates above the recommended dose, the DXM in Coricidin and similar medications can cause psychoactive effects such as hallucinations. In 2010, an FDA Advisory Council investigated the abuse of cough syrups containing these ingredients, particularly among teens, and found that the abuse of DXM can cause death as well as other serious adverse events such as brain damage.
