Some scams are hard to identify while others give themselves away. Unfortunately, even those that should be obvious have victims because of the fear experienced by the perceived threat. The Rifle Police Department is drawing attention to a common scam in the area in which a scammer pretends to be a law enforcement officer or agency and asks the victim to buy gift cards to get themselves or someone they love out of trouble. Rifle PD’s message is applicable to all. There is no legitimate law enforcement agency, government agency, or company that will ever ask you to buy gift cards. If you are called, texted, or emailed and asked to buy gift cards, please hang up or disengage. These calls can then be reported to your local law enforcement agency.
