A repeat DUI offender was arrested once again driving under the influence on Friday in Uintah County. According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause, an officer observed a gray Ford pickup leaving its lane and struggling to operate in a single lane. A traffic stop was initiated and the vehicle was pulled over near milepost 357 of Highway 191. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was identified as 52-year-old Samuel Cooper Wright. Cases of beer with bottles missing could be seen in the rear seats and when officers informed him of the reason for the stop, it was noted that Wright seemed “unusually dazed, confused, and appearing to nervously fidget”. He told officers that he was swerving due to using his phone GPS and then told officers that he did not have a valid driver’s license which was confirmed. When asked if he had been drinking, Wright said that he had and admitted there was a beer inside the vehicle. Field sobriety testing was performed and it was determined that Wright was unsafe to be driving and he was placed under arrest. An open beer bottle was found tucked under the driver’s seat and a fresh empty beer bottle was found inside one of the cases in the rear seat. Samuel Cooper Wright is charged with 3rd Degree Felony DUI with 2 or more priors in 10 years, Open Container, Driving on a Denied License, and Failure to Stay in One Lane.
