While heavily criticized by environmental groups, a Rocky Mountain Power decision has also found support, including from Representative John Curtis. Rocky Mountain Power submitted their Integrated Resource Plan to the state this week that called for extending the use of coal-fired energy specifically in southeastern Utah plants, until at least the year 2042. Representative Curtis made the following statement on April 3rd: “The decision by Rocky Mountain Power to extend the life of coal plants shows why market driven policies are better answers than the government picking winners and losers. We can’t move faster than the pace of technology if we want a reliable and resilient energy grid. With Utah’s natural resources, it is possible to reach our goal of affordable, reliable, and clean energy.”
