Proposition 5 Meeting Draws Arguments For and Against

Nearly 50 people attended a meeting
Thursday night
aimed at educating Uintah County voters on the proposition they will find on their ballots for the upcoming election. Proposition 5 asks voters to decide if Uintah County shall be authorized to impose a quarter of one percent sales tax, which is the equivalent of 1 cent for every $4 dollars spent, for the purpose of transportation services locally. Those in attendance were split in their opinions for and against. Those against have stated that the measure should not be on the ballot because it represents a raise in taxes, which they are against for any reason. Those that are for the proposition have cited that the tax will only apply to non-food items, that it will help support BTA which local families depend on, that it will support transportation budgets, and that the tax is more favorable than a property tax because visitors to the area are also paying the tax when they purchase non-food items. If passed, 10% of the revenues will go to BTA with the rest split between the county and cities.
