Uintah County Sheriff Steve Labrum shares that they have been working with Project Lifesaver International to bring a new and exciting program to Uintah County residents and families. “This program is specifically designed to assist with locating missing and wandering children with Autism and Down Syndrome. The idea of doing more to assist our autistic community was hatched a couple of years ago by Vernal City Police Sergeant Shawn Lewis. After Sheriff Labrum took office in 2019, conversations continued on what could be done, which ultimately led the Sheriff to Dr. Mir Khan. After explaining the idea to Dr. Khan, he graciously offered to buy the equipment needed to bring this project to life. Through the Project Lifesaver program, a child will wear a radio transmitter, similar to a watch. If the child wanders away from their home or a caregiver, they will notify law enforcement and we will then activate a search for the child using a receiver designed to locate the transmitter the child is wearing. Utilization of these tools can cut down search times significantly…” To learn more, be part of it, or donate please contact The Uintah County Sheriff’s Office at 435-789-2511.
