This time of year poses increased risks for home fires. The Duchesne Fire Department has shared the following reminders: Half of all home heating fires occur in December, January, and February. As you try to stay cozy and warm this winter, stay fire smart! Plug only 1 heat-producing appliance, such as a space heater, into an electrical outlet at a time. Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from any heat source. When it comes to holiday decorating, only use non-flammable or flame retardant decorations. Check holiday lights each year for frayed wires or excessive wear and do not link more than 3 strands. Never leave a burning candle unattended and consider using battery operated flameless candles. If you have a natural Christmas tree, keep it away from any heat source and water it daily to keep it from becoming dry. And the final way to make safety a top priority is during holiday cooking. In case of an oven fire, turn off the oven and keep the door closed until it is cool. Have the oven checked by a qualified professional before using it again.
