Ouray National Wildlife Refuge Porcupine Viewing Day Coming Up

The Division of Wildlife Resources has teamed up with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to offer a special viewing event of one of Utah’s sleepy and pokey native residents, the porcupine. DWR Conservation Outreach Manager Tonya Kieffer-Selby shares that this new wildlife viewing event will be a fun and unique opportunity “ to see our local rodents as they slumber and forage in the nearby refuge canopy. This is an incredible opportunity, especially for any wildlife photographers, as these rodents exist in large numbers near the refuge.” Those that would like to attend are invited to meet at the Ouray National Wildlife Refuge visitor’s office parking lot at 9am on March 16th. Chances are you’ll see a lot more than just porcupines. “This is a great time of year to experience wildlife in one of the Uintah Basin’s hidden little secrets,” shares Kieffer-Selby. “There is a high chance you will also see many eagles, birds, mule deer and other wildlife species that frequent the refuge.” Remember though that these are wild animals, and although you are very likely to see them, it may be from a distance so bring your binoculars if possible. Also note that there are no amenities in the area so bring water, food, and whatever else you may need.
