The billowing smoke from a prescribed burn in Jensen had some community members concerned on Wednesday. The burn is being conducted by the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands in conjunction with the Division of Wildlife Resources. “It’s a habitat restoration project broken into project parcels on Stewart Lake waterfowl management area,” shares DWR Outreach Manager Tonya Kieffer. “They can only perform the burn during the days and times when there’s no wind so they [burned on Wednesday].” The weather determines the burn days and the wind has not been cooperating, explains Kieffer. “The area closest to Jensen residents was already burned a couple weeks ago, so the smoke may look intimidating but they do have it under control.” Biologists on Wednesday’s burn reported that the burn was a huge success with greater than 90 percent consumption. This completed both units and creates better habitat for future fish and wildlife management.
