A bull moose hanging around the area of Loudy Simpson Park in Moffat County has prompted the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office to remind the public to stay aware of the dangers these magnificent creatures present. The bull moose has shown agitation at the presence of people and dogs, a situation that is to be expected, so it is crucial that people and dogs stay far back. This situation means it is a good time to offer some safety reminders to the public. Moose are not easily spooked and in no way are they afraid of humans. Females will aggressively defend their calves and bulls will defend their territory at all times, with increased aggression during the fall mating season. While it is relatively safe to watch and take pictures at a distance, if the moose reacts to your presence you are too close. Moose see dogs as predators and will attack aggressively so either leave your dog at home or keep the dog on a leash and under control. Some signs to know when a moose is getting aggressive include raised hair around its neck, ears pinned back, and a lowered head. It will start to sway back and forth and there will be snorting. Be warned! A moose may charge with NO PRIOR WARNING.
