The Monument Fire burning in the Book Cliffs in Uintah County is 40 percent contained as of Monday night. According to Utah Fire Info, the fire remained at 82 acres as no change in acreage was reported on Monday. “Firefighters found pockets of heat near their lines earlier that they expected would cool down,” shared the update. “That did not happen. Crews worked throughout the day on the fire’s edge to extinguish the hot spots with help from a helicopter crew making water drops. Firefighters also searched unburned areas near the fire’s edge, looking for possible hot spots to ensure their control lines were holding.” The Monument Fire was caused by lightning and was reported on Saturday, July 22nd, just after 3:30pm. The fire is located about 55 miles southeast of Vernal in the Book Cliffs near Monument Ridge Road and Cliff Dweller Ridge.
