It’s back to the drawing board for the future of emergency services in Moffat County after two propositions on the election ballot failed to secure the votes. Proposition 6A asked if a Moffat County Health Service District should be organized. Of the 3,500 votes cast, 42.4 percent voted FOR the organization of a health service district and 57.6 percent voted AGAINST. Proposition 6B asked if taxes should be increased by just over $1 million dollars or an increase of about $35 dollars per household annually to fund the Moffat County Health Service District. Of the 4,033 votes cast, 32.28 percent voted FOR the tax increase and 67.72 percent voted AGAINST. Among other responsibilities, the service district would make a plan for ambulance services throughout the county. Memorial Regional Health, the hospital in Craig, provides emergency services but is limited in its service area. In fact, remote areas like Maybell operate emergency services with a volunteer crew that is not always available. Other areas like Dinosaur simply does not have any emergency services and relies on ambulance response from the Vernal area over 30 miles away.
