An attempted robbery at a clothing store in downtown Vernal was not only unsuccessful but an effortless case to crack for investigators. According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause, officers were dispatched to the store on Sunday because a man was sitting in the Uintah County Jail parking lot wishing to turn himself in for attempting to burglarize the store. Officers noted a large rock in front of the store door and multiple deep scrapes in the glass door. Officers then went to the Uintah County Jail parking lot and met with the would-be robber. He told officers that he had tried to break the window in an effort to get inside the store to take any money but “didn’t end up going inside the store because he felt bad which resulted in him going to the jail to turn himself in.” Dakota Melton was arrested for the offenses of Attempted Burglary and Property Damage and Destruction.
