A man is in custody following a high speed chase in Duchesne County
on Monday morning
. According to the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office, sheriff’s deputies were called on an “attempt to locate” for a suicidal subject in his mid 20s
around 8:00am
. The white Chevy S-10 pickup the young man was driving was located about 4 miles north of the city of Duchesne and deputies tried to contact the individual but he drove away and deputies pursued him. “At one point, the driver pointed what appeared to be a handgun at himself while fleeing from the pursuing deputies,” shares the Sheriff’s Office. “A deputy tried to spike the tires of the fleeing pickup near
5000 South and state Road 87
. The driver was able to avoid the spike strip and fled north on SR-87 with speeds reaching nearly 90 mph.” Another set of spikes were set up, this time on SR-87 at mile marker 19 and the driver was unable to avoid the spikes. The driver continued and officers had to shut down roads leading to SR-87 to protect the public. Altamont High School and Altamont Elementary School were placed on lockdown as a precaution. The driver continued eastbound on SR-87, driving on the rim of one front wheel when he lost control and crashed the vehicle near the junction of Highway 40 west of Roosevelt. The man was taken into custody without further incident, reports the Sheriff’s Office, and on the front seat of his vehicle officers found a loaded 12 gauge shotgun and a 9mm handgun. He was taken to Uintah Basin Medical Center “due to his level of intoxication and his involvement in a crash.” At the time of the press release, it was expected he would be booked into Duchesne County Jail once medically cleared from the hospital. Roosevelt City Police and Utah Highway Patrol both assisted in the pursuit. The man’s name is not being released at this time.
