by | Dec 26, 2019 | News | 0 comments

Ice is forming on bodies of water around the Basin and safety is of course of the utmost importance. From the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, as a general guideline the following is the minimum thickness of clear, hard ice. Always stay off of ice 0 to 3 inches thick. It can be safe for one person with personal gear to be on 4 inches of ice. A small group spread out can be safe on 5 inches. The following are not recommended, but if you must, proceed at your own risk. Never bring a snowmobile or ATV on less than 6 inches of ice. The minimum for taking a small automobile onto the ice is 9 inches. The minimum for taking a pickup truck or SUV on ice is 12 inches. Always err on the side of caution and make safety the top priority when enjoying outdoor winter activities.
