When it comes to celebrating the New Year’s holiday, make sure safety is part of your plans. As always, law enforcement will have extra patrols out to watch for DUI drivers. “We want everyone to enjoy ringing in the New Year, but don’t start it out by getting behind the wheel if you have been drinking,” shares Uintah County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Brian Fletcher. “Have a plan before the partying starts. Call a friend or call a cab but just have a designated driver ready to get you home safe.” The increase in patrols for DUI enforcement is happening statewide and the Department of Public Safety has the following message for designated drivers: No matter what, do not drink alcohol — people are relying on you. If you are attending a party or at a bar, enjoy the food, the company, and the nonalcoholic drinks. If someone you know has been drinking and tries to drive, take their keys and help them get home safely. Even if they make a fuss in the moment, they’ll thank you later. And one more important reminder from the Department of Public Safety: Never serve alcohol to minors. If an underage person drinks and drives, the person who provided the alcohol can be held liable for any damage, injury, or death caused by the underage driver. In fact, you could face jail time if you host a gathering where alcohol is served to people under the age of 21.
