A group trained as cultural site stewards in the Vernal area are receiving much deserved recognition. Utah’s Cultural Site Stewardship Program has become the largest steward program in the country. Out of that group, the volunteers that contribute to protecting archaeological and cultural sites in Dinosaur National Monument have been awarded the National Park Service Intermountain Region’s 2023 Excellence in Volunteerism Team Award. “Your willingness to share your time and skills have helped preserve Dinosaur National Monument’s cultural heritage and enhanced the experience of park visitors,” says John (Phil) Akers, park superintendent. “Your hard work, dedication, and positive attitude have enriched the lives of those who visit Utah’s archaeological sites, both inside and outside of Dinosaur National Monument.” The stewards are local volunteers who come from all walks of life, levels of ability, and professions. Potential volunteers and land managers are invited to learn more about the program at ushpo.utah.gov
